Currently, there is a young person on the popular game show Jeopardy that is killing it. Unbelievably, she is only 23 years old and she’d already won 14 straight games as of the writing of this story. Her name is Mattea Roach.
You wouldn’t know her name, however, if you’d only seen what NBC News recently Tweeted about her. Take a look:
Granted, Mattea Roach’s name was mentioned in the story, but the Tweet got a lot of criticism, including for not calling Roach by name, for mentioning her sexual preference at all and for plain grammatical errors. Daily Mail US Tweeted about it quite succinctly:
Now come on NBC News! You deserve what you got. Your reporters are clearly so “woke” they believe a person should be know first by their sexual preference instead of by their name. Or again, maybe it’s not Roach’s sexual preference, but her job tutoring lesbians…. it’s hard to tell. It’s as if some other Zoomer, who would not have done as well on Jeopardy, wrote the Tweet.
Let’s give credit where credit IS due here though. This remarkable young woman has managed to amass over $320,000 and to beat 14 other very smart human beings. And here’s some other information about her: she’s Canadian, she loves the Talking Heads, she attended Catholic School and she has been able to pay her own student loans. And yes, she is a lesbian too. But that’s not the point.
Why do you think it was important for NBC News to let everyone know Roach’s sexual preference, before telling anyone her name? Please sound off in the comments.
