Netflix has already axed a series titled Pearl being produced conjunction with Meghan Markle through Archewell Productions, owned by the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry. It shows that even the royals are not immune to the cuts happening at Netflix.
Pearl is the animated series that features the adventures of a 12-year-old girl that finds information from strong women throughout history. The show was headed by producers David Furnish, Carolyn Soper and Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan, Emmy-winning filmmakers.
“Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges,” said Markle at the time of the series’ announcement. “I’m thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history. David Furnish and I have been eager to bring this special series to light, and I am delighted we are able to announce it today.”
Meghan Markle is no stranger to hearing the word “no” as she has been in around Hollywood for a while. Deadline reports that there are other shows that Archewell productions has several other projects that are in the works.
Netflix has also axed two other animated series this week: Dino Daycare and Scientist, and Boons and Curses. This comes among a cratering in Netflix stock prices and some forced cutbacks in their gargantuan spend on content.
Netflix was known for their “movie a week” goal and it looks like the streaming company is facing pressure to start cutting back some of it’s spend on different titles as rival streaming services are catching up.
We’ll likely see an evolution at Netflix that involves more quality control on the content coming out. It’s a sign that the company is maturing and should likely lead to some even better shows.
