California Sen. Dianne Feinstein Shows More Signs of Impaired Cognitive Ability

California Senator Dianne Feinstein is 88 years old. Some people at that age are still mentally sharp. Feinstein is not.

To her credit, Dianne Feinstein has been serving in the Senate for 30 years. She was once a Democrat powerhouse. But even some Democrats have acknowledged her cognitive decline. Six lawmakers and aides spoke anonymously to the New York Times about Feinstein . They described a Feinstein that “sometimes struggles to recall the names of colleagues, frequently has little recollection of meetings or telephone conversations, and at times walks around in a state of befuddlement — including about why she is increasingly dogged by questions about whether she is fit to serve in the Senate representing the 40 million residents of California.”

Senator is an important job. Feinstein happens to represent a state that has the highest population in the country. And while Senate literally means “council of elders,” that has to mean wise elders, not those in mental decline.

Most recently, Feinstein made this mistake:

According to those who spoke anonymously, that was not an isolated misspeak, or “brain fart,” as it’s sometimes called. Rather, it is a common occurrence. But it’s something that Democrats are trying to keep secret and to manage.

Feinstein herself seems to have no intention of going anywhere. Even though, as reported by the San Francisco Chronical, four U.S. senators, including three Democrats, as well as three former Feinstein staffers and a California Democratic member of Congress said recently that Feinstein’s memory is rapidly deteriorating, and that it appears she can no longer fulfill her job duties without her staff doing much of the work, Feinstein has said “there’s no question I’m still serving and delivering for the people of California, and I’ll put my record up against anyone’s.”

No one likes to see a person lose their cognitive abilities. It is a very sad thing to watch and it could eventually happen to any one of us. But someone like Feinstein is in a position that literally affects millions of people. Why do you think Democrats are trying to keep Feinstein’s mental state a secret?
