Reports from the Black Sea are saying that a Russian warship may have been shot by Ukrainian forces overnight.
Oleksiy Goncharenko, head of the council of the city of Odesa, a major port and naval base in Ukraine posted on his Telegram channel that the frigate was the Admiral Makarov. According to Dailymail, the ship cost $500 million and was commissioned five years ago.
The Kyiv Post reported the GRuz200 Military news website said that a naval source had confirmed that a Neptune anti-ship missile had injured the vessel.
Goncharenko said that the ship was in trouble overnight and then followed up with a local news report saying that the ship had been shot with a Ukrainian missile. This has not been confirmed by other sources.
This would be another major blow to the Russian Navy especially following the sinking of Putin’s flagship Black Sea vessel the Moskva. There is estimated that hundreds died from the crew.
Goncharenko posted on Friday, “The patrol frigate of the Russian Navy ‘Admiral Makarov’ is despondent. The God of the seas takes revenge on the offenders of Ukraine.”
“The frigate Admiral Makarov was laid down in February 2012 at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad and launched in September 2015.”
“And in 2022, when he took part in the murder of Ukrainians, he was struck by the God of the Seas. He hasn’t set off after Moskva yet, but the trouble has begun.”
The reference to Neptune is likely in reference to Ukraine’s main anti-ship missile: the Neptune.”
There has been no official statement from the Ukrainian Military about striking the ship.
A Ukrainian parliament member Oleksiy Honcharenko said online that the ship that was struck was the Admiral Makarov. Forbes reported on May 6 that the Admiral Makarov frigate might be the “juiciest target in the black sea” following the sinking of the Moskva on April 14.
