Senator Susan Collins has received a lot of frightening messages in the past. So when she got a message about abortion at her house, she didn’t hesitate to call the police and report it.

The message stated, “Mainers Want WHPA. Clean up your mess.” “WHPA” refers to the Women’s Health Protection Act” which was being voted on in the Senate Wednesday and thankfully failed by a vote of 49-51.

Susan Collins voted “no” on the Act, but has been working with Senator Murkowski on their own bill to codify Supreme Court decisions on reproductive rights.  

Collins has been threatened in the past, and could receive threats again, from both sides, based upon her vote today and the bill she wants to introduce. Hopefully she will not, but with emotions running high on this issue on both sides, it’s possible.

“I support the abortion rights established by Roe v. Wade and affirmed by Planned Parenthood v. Casey,” Susan Collins has said. She went on, referring to her own bill, “Our legislation would enshrine these important protections into law without undercutting statutes that have been in place for decades and provide basic conscience protections that are relied upon by health care providers who have religious objections to performing abortions.” 

Liberals have left messages for Susan Collins, trying to get her to vote yes on the WHPA. Conservatives have also left her messages, such as a letter she received recently. The letter said frightening things like: “The angel of death is about to visit your house, for you have given yourself to the other side, just like so many others for money and power.”

The letter went on: “You will pay a high price for your treasonous acts against this nation. You thought you would get by with selling this country off to the highest bidder along with all who are with you, and that’s the farthest thing from the truth. All of you will pay for the damage you have caused against MY nation, the United States of America, and Israel.” 

It concluded by saying: You are a traitor, Susan, and you will reap what you have sown in this hour of judgment, saith the Lord of Hosts.”

Susan Collins is a Republican Senator who supports a woman’s right to an abortion, but with restrictions. This is not a popular position within the party. Is she right to speak and act according to her own conscience, or should she go along with the majority in her party?
