Texas Governor Abbott Signals Political Aspirations

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is no stranger to big moves that get him a lot of attention. For example, his “trigger law” that will outlaw most abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned. He was also one of the Governors who allowed the most freedom during the height of the Covid-19 mandates.

Now Governor Abbott is once again pushing for school vouchers as part of his “parental rights” plan, reports KXAN Austin. “Make no mistake, the governor is laying out not only a strategy to embolden his campaign for re-election, I think everything he’s been doing since the end of the special session has been a test to see how these themes would work at a national level,” said Dr. Richard Pineda with the University of Texas at El Paso.

Governor Greg Abbott

Abbott is having campaign events, after all. At his most recent one he announced, “Empowering parents means giving them the choice to send their children to any public school, charter school or private school with state funding following the student.”

In a recent Tweet, Governor Abbott talked about his Parental Bill of Rights: I’m running for re-election to ensure parents are the main decision makers in their child’s education. My Parental Bill of Rights we will: * Ensure parents are primary decision makers * Provides access to curriculum * Protect children * Notify parents of their rights

Abbott’s recent remarks about school vouchers were greeted with applause from the Texas Federation for Children (TFC), part of the pro-school choice American Federation for Children reported KXAN Austin. “Students — not teachers, not administrators, not systems or bureaucracies — are the reason we have a constitutional right to an education, and that right must extend to a clearly articulated and well-funded system that allows parents to pick the school which is best for their child. Thanks to Greg Abbott’s leadership, the educational freedom movement in Texas has been lit on fire.”

Governor Abbott is definitely running for re-election in Texas. Do you think he has higher political aspirations? Would you vote for Greg Abbott for Senator if you’re a Texan? For President?
