A nationwide shortage of baby formula has parents everywhere scrambling to provide food for their young children. The New York City’s Mayor has come up with a solution to try to help.
On Sunday, Mayor Eric Adams signed Emergency Executive Order 98. One of the driving forces of the action is to prevent price gouging. The Orders says, in part: “WHEREAS, the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection has received complaints concerning allegations of sellers charging excessive prices for infant formula, and, pursuant to section 5-42 of Title 6 of the Rules of the City of New York, it is an unconscionable trade practice to sell or offer for sale certain goods, including infant formula, at an excessive price during a declared state of emergency in New York City[.]”

Discussing the Order, Mayor Adams said: “The nationwide infant formula shortage has caused unimaginable pain and anxiety for families across New York — and we must act with urgency. This emergency executive order will help us to crack down on any retailer looking to capitalize on this crisis by jacking up prices on this essential good. Our message to struggling mothers and families is simple: Our city will do everything in its power to assist you during this challenging period,” reports silive.com.
It’s truly hard to imagine anyone price gouging on baby formula, but I’m sure there’s people out there that would do it to make an extra buck. Imagine being a desperate parent, finally finding a can of formula, only to find that the seller has jacked the price up to an exorbitant amount. While New York City Mayor Eric Adams can be problematic in a lot of areas, in this one he is helping. Should more places do this?
