Manchin Will Not Eliminate Filibuster To Push Gun Control

Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin has now made his stance clear on the Democrat’s push to scrap the filibuster to pass tighter gun control in Congress after the elementary school mass shooting that took place Tuesday in Texas.

According to a statement to The Hill, Manchin called the shooting in Texas “absolutely horrific.”

“You all know where I stand; I’ll do anything I can,” the Senator said.

Manchin doesn’t seem opposed to gun control measures and said “it makes no sense at all why we can’t do common sense things and try to prevent some of this from happening. It’s unbelievable how we’ve gotten to a society where someone could be this deranged and this sick.”

Manchin said that he will oppose any efforts to remove the filibuster, though, that many democrats have called for in order to get the legislation they want passed through Capitol gridlock.

On the issue, Manchin said, “The filibuster is the only thing that prevents us from total insanity. Total insanity.”

Manchin’s stance on the filibuster has remained constant. In a statement in January, he said that “we need some good rule changes to make the place work better. But getting rid of the filibuster doesn’t make the place work better.” See what he said below in the video.

He said several days later that he would never “eliminate or weaken the filibuster.”

“The filibuster plays an important role in protecting our democracy from the transitory passions of the majority and respecting the input of the minority in the Senate,” he said at the time.

On Tuesday, Border Patrol agents and police officers killed out a mass shooter who murdered at least 18 students and three adults during a mass shooting at an elementary school in Texas this week.

The shooting took place at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde when 18-year-old gunman, Salvador Ramos, shot his own grandmother before storming the school and opening fire on the young students.

Do you think that Manchin is right to oppose the filibuster? Do you think Democrats will push through gun control in response to the mass shooting?
