California Congresswoman Maxine Waters spoke up about the House Democrats’ plan for the bi-partisan Senate gun control bill.
Rep Waters went on MSNBC’s “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart” where she declared that the Democrats are ready to “quickly” pass the incoming bill regardless of what’s in it.
However, the Congresswoman also expressed disappointment in the incoming bill for lacking some of the Democrats’ loftier goals like banning assault rifles and large clips.
Rep Waters said, “I think that there is a little breakthrough here. I understand what the agreement is, it may not be as comprehensive as some of us would like it to be but I consider it to be progress.”
Maxine also took time to try and cast the bill as a win for Biden despite it containing almost none of his personal goals.
“I’m pleased with the president’s statement. I’m pleased with the effort that has been put forth by all of the negotiators. Again, let me just make it clear, it is not everything we would want,” She said. “It is not everything the president would want. As Nancy Pelosi has said, we are going to sign off on whatever comes out of the Senate. We are going to try quickly to get it to the president’s desk.”
Joe Biden made similar claims to Waters on Sunday, saying he was ready to sign any bill that comes across his desk while also expressing slight disappointment at what’s actually in it.
The new gun control/school safety bill was approved by 10 Republicans and 10 Democrats and is expected to pass the Senate. It mostly provides funding for school safety programs, while also adding a waiting period and juvenile background check to gun buyers under the age of 21.
The new bill is likely to leave everyone unhappy. Republicans because it does add new restrictions to purchasing firearms and Democrats because it contains none of their actual goals. Do you think either side will keep pushing once it passes or will they both call it a day and move on to other issues?
