Police Made Officer Husband of Teacher That Died in Uvalde Massacre Leave Scene

Every day the story seems to grow worse. The Texas Rangers, a Texas Department of Public Safety agency, is leading the investigation into the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas and its findings have been beyond troubling. Here’s just one more.

This finding involves one of the teachers, Eva Mireles, who was murdered that day. Ruben Ruiz was her husband and he worked as a police officer in the district. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety Director, Col. Steven McCraw Mireles called her husband and told him she had been “shot and she’s dying.”

When Ruiz tried to get to his wife that tragic day, “[h]e was detained and they took his gun away from him and escorted him off the scene,” McGraw said.

“The only thing stopping a hallway of dedicated officers from entering room 111 and 112 was the on-scene commander who decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children,” McCraw said. Those officers included Ruben Ruiz who was trying to save his dying wife.

Eva Mireles was still alive 22 minutes after her husband was escorted from the scene, at 12:10 p.m., when one of the children called 911 for help. “I don’t want to die, my teacher is dead, my teacher is dead, please send help, send help for my teacher, she is shot but still alive,” the child pleaded.

Mirales was still alive when the killer was finally stopped. “Officers could be seen in video footage rushing a few children out of the room and carrying out Ms. Mireles, who appeared to be in extreme pain. She reached an ambulance, but died before reaching a hospital,” reported the Times.

Officer Ruiz is one of three school district officers listed as instructing an active shooter training course that was hosted by his department in March 2022. And he was forced by other officers to leave.

There are so many things that went wrong that day, and it only leads one to wonder, how many children and teachers would still be alive if it weren’t for the incompetence of the on-scene commander that day. How do you feel when you read about this?
