There are now 50 people found dead in a tractor-trailer near San Antonio, Texas, according to Mexican officials.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Mexican secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Marcelo Ebrard now say that 50 people are dead. The deceased and injured include people from Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.
According to San Antonio authorities 46 people were found dead in the tractor trailer on Monday night. Another two people died after arriving in the hospital. There were 16 injured people transported to local hospitals after the discovery, according to San Antonio police.
“It’s tragic,” said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “They had families… and were likely trying to find a better life. It’s nothing short of a horrific human tragedy.”
This is the largest mass casualty event ever seen in San Antonio’s history.
“We hope that those responsible for putting these people through such inhumane conditions are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Nirenberg said.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said that officers showed up at the site when a person nearby called for help.
The person who alerted authorities said he saw several bodies inside an 18-wheeler trailer with doors partially open.
The San Antonio Fire Department showed up and said they found “stacks of bodies” in the trailer. Many of the victims were so weak that they could not muster the strength to escape, according to SAFD Chief Charles Hood.
On Monday, temperatures near San Antonio were over 100 degrees. The conditions inside led many immigrants to die from heat stroke and heat exhaustion. The trailer had no air conditioning and did not have water.
First responders helped 16 people out of the trailer that were reportedly hot to the touch. Four of them were minors.
The Department of Homeland Security Investigations are now taking over the investigation and put out the following statement Monday night.
Democrat Governor Offering Clemency For Abortion Doctors
“On June 27, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) responded to a call from San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) in reference to an alleged human smuggling event involving a tractor trailer on Quintana Road near Cassin Road. Upon arrival in the scene, HSI confirmed more than 40 deceased individuals,” said DHS.
These are the kind of stories that are becoming commonplace in this country. The things that happen across the border are horrifying: human trafficking, drug smuggling, and murders all over the place. Meanwhile, Biden has made it easier to cross the border. Do you think these deaths are partly the White House’s fault?
