California School Board Member Demands Boycott of July 4th

A woke school board member in California issued a statement this week demanding a boycott of July 4th activities while also criticizing America.

AnaMarie Avila Farias, a member of the Contra Costa County board of education, shared a post on Facebook this week with a fading American flag and the words “BOYCOTT 4TH OF JULY”.

Alvia Farias went on to brag that she quit celebrating the holiday the year that Donald Trump was elected President, saying, “I haven’t celebrated 4th of July since 2016 and I don’t think it’s a holiday to celebrate. What do you think?”

One user asked in the comment section, “Why boycott the 4th of July? Without what our forefathers did we as Americans would not have the freedoms that we have today.”

“I am not feeling particularly patriotic,” Avila Farias replied.

The California school board member added that she refused to celebrate an “oppressive government” especially after the Supreme Court reversed Roe v Wade abortion protections.

She said, “I am especially not interested in celebrating a holiday centered around freedom from oppressive government when that freedom is not a reality for so many people in this country. Lastly, last Friday women’s reproductive rights were taken away. We are not in a place of progress or celebration when human rights are being taken away.”

Another commenter suggested that they have a “funeral to bury the Constitution and Flag” to which she enthusiastically responded “Please invite me!”

Avila Farias, who is a member of the Democratic Party of Contra Costa County (DPCCC), also shared out a blog post from Medium titled “9 Reasons Why I Don’t Celebrate the 4th of July“.

Another School Board member named Mike Maxwell weighed in on the issue, saying that while he doesn’t agree with her statement, its on her private social media and is not an official statement from the school board.

“It’s her personal Facebook page; she is entitled to say whatever Facebook will allow her to say. And while I also am disappointed with the recent developments in honoring rights among Americans, I do not agree with her statement,” Maxwell told FOX News in an email.

Maxwell also warned that voters may not be as forgiving for the statement as the Board, adding, “As long as she is not making the statement on behalf of the Board and County, go for it. But the smart voters will connect who is making that statement.”

While the other member is right that her statements were private, it’s still concerning that someone like Avila Farias is in charge of children’s education. Do you think there should be more immediate consequences for the California school board member? If so, what?
