Karine Jean-Pierre Goes Off On Jeff Bezos For What He Tweeted at Biden

If you want to see “adults” go at each other like high school kids, all you have to do is get on Twitter. You can catch all sorts of things, like celebs going after each other about divorce issues and whatnot, Elon Musk going after Twitter itself, and everyone going after the POTUS. After Jeff Bezos recently went after Biden for lying to the American people again about gas prices, his newest Press Secretary tried to go after Bezos. But it was a big fail.

On Saturday Biden tweeted out his latest attempt to take the heat off of himself regarding gas prices. He said: “My message to the companies running gas stations and setting prices at the pump is simple: this is a time of war and global peril. Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you’re paying for the product. And do it now.”

Biden demanded that companies who run gas stations bring the price of gas down. It appears that this got under Jeff Bezos’ skin because he responded: “Ouch. Inflation is far too important a problem for the White House to keep making statements like this. It’s either straight ahead misdirection or a deep misunderstanding of basic market dynamics.”

It should be noted that Jeff Bezos doesn’t tweet much. Maybe once or twice a month, at least lately. So he must have felt it important to address it.

The next day it seems that Biden’s Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, felt she needed to take up for her boss. Or more likely, she was told to, since she tweeted back at Bezos: “Oil prices have dropped by about $15 over the past month, but prices at the pump have barely come down. That’s not “basic market dynamics.” It’s a market that is failing the American consumer.”

Here’s the problem: where did she get that number? As of June 29, “[o]il marked its first monthly decline since November as OPEC+ completed the return of output it halted during the pandemic and signs emerged that the US economy was on weaker footing than expected,” reports Bloomberg. They further report that the monthly decline was 7.8%. Where she gets a drop of $15 over the past month is unclear.

But then she added: “But I guess it’s not surprising that you think oil and gas companies using market power to reap record profits at the expense of the American people is the way our economy is supposed to work.”

Sounds there like she’s taking a cheap shot at Amazon, the company Jeff Bezos founded. While Bezos has made billions with Amazon, it’s unclear how that has been at the expense of the American people. It’s saved the American people a lot of money and is truly the way many of us now shop.

But back to Biden’s original tweet that’s gotten all the attention. Companies running gas stations and setting the price at the pump don’t make much money off of the gas they sell. Most of their profits come from people coming inside and buying snacks, cigarettes, drinks, etc. In fact, “[f]actoring in expenses, which include rent, utilities, freight, labor and credit card fees, a retailer is left with about 2 cents per gallon in profit.” When wholesale gas prices climb, gas station owners try their best not to pass that along to their customers, because they don’t want to chase them to the next station. They need people to come inside and buy the products in there to make a profit.

Biden has been such a disappointment. Conservatives knew he would be, but Democrats seemed to think he would do good things. Now, even they are sorely disappointed. He doesn’t help himself at all when he accepts no responsibility for anything. Do you think the Democratic Party will try to stop Biden from running for a second term?
