Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas admitted that the current approach to the US border crisis could result in more mass human tragedies like the one that happened in Texas last week.
Last week the US Border Patrol found an abandoned semi-truck trailer on a road outside San Antonio, Texas. Inside the truck were 53 dead migrants that had roasted to death in the summer heat. It was the most horrific single immigration incident like this in the history of the United States.
Secretary Mayorkas appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan to discuss the crisis at the southern border.
The big moment came after Mayorkas suggested that the tragedy in Texas was just “one possible tragic result” to coming here illegally. Brennan then asked if he was predicting more massacres like that in the future due to the “record surge in migrants”, adding that him simply telling people not to come wasn’t working.
When Mayorkas tried to defend the Department of Homeland Security’s honor in the wake of the deaths, bragging about their prosecution of the criminals involved, the CBS host fired back that they still managed to get 53 people past the border patrol in the back of a truck.
Brennan asked, “So how did this smuggler get these people across? 53 people died.”
Mayorkas then began a rambling response peppered with the word “sophisticated”.
“Now, they are very sophisticated, using technology and they’re extraordinarily organized transnational criminal enterprises. And we are much more sophisticated using technology and personnel 24 hours a day,” the DHS Secretary said. “You know, we have saved more than 10,000 individuals this fiscal year alone and more than 400 vehicle inspections. So can a truck get through- through sophisticated means? Sometimes, yes.”
Following the conversation about the border crisis, Margret Brennan pressed Secretary Mayorkas on his agency’s response to attacks against conservative Supreme Court justices.
Mayorkas acknowledged that there is a “heightened threat environment” since the reversal of Roe v Wade, confirming that they have deployed DHS personnel “for that purpose.”
The Secretary then added, “We do not condone violence and law enforcement will and has responded to acts of violence when people do not honor their freedom to protest peacefully, but instead violate the laws of our country and the states within it.”
Alejandro Mayorkas is clearly feeling pressure as the Biden administration comes under more and more criticism for their handling of crime at the border and around our country. Do you think he will keep his job much longer or will he be the next Cabinet member to “retire”?
