On Sunday, White House Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said that he does not think the overturning of Roe will last long while interviewing on NBC’s Meet the Press with Chuck Todd.

Becerra said, “Unless we’re all going to say the word of the Supreme Court will no longer have value, we have to heed the word of the Supreme Court.”

“I’ve been around long enough to know that nothing’s ever totally safe. But remember, we still haven’t even been able to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, and so this country has a way to go,” Becerra told NBC’s “Meet the Press,” referring to proposed equal rights amendment for women. “But certainly, I don’t believe this decision by this court and [Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization] is going to stand long.”

He added: “This is just not America. We’re not about taking rights. Most people around the world haven’t looked at the U.S. as the beacon of light because we do things like Dobbs. Just the opposite. So I’m confident that we’re going to get past this.”

Becerra continued by saying that the Democrats in Congress need to give the President ways to codify Roe v. Wade into federal law. Biden ran on doing that in 2019 and has asked the legislature to do it for him. He has not presented his own plan.

Biden also proposed while in Madrid, Spain last month that the Senate should carve out a filibuster to pass an abortion law. It’s not clear if he has the votes to make that happen currently.

“If the filibuster gets in the way, it’s like voting rights, it should be ‘we provide an exception for this’ — require an exception to the filibuster for this action to deal with the Supreme Court decision,” Biden said.
