Top Russian Official Threatens Russia Could Take Back Alaska

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, after threatening to do so for many months. Since, the Biden administration has supported Ukraine in its defense against Russia, by supplying billions of dollars of weapons and. One thing the Biden administration has not done much of is trying to help negotiate peace between the two countries.

Recently, there have been efforts to establish an international tribunal to investigate perceived war crimes Russia has committed against Ukraine. And just this week, a top Russian official warned the United States that it would face the “wrath of God” if it assisted with the tribunal. In addition to that threat, “a Russian lower house speaker warned Washington to remember that Alaska once belonged to Russia,” reports PBS.

Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council chaired by President Vladimir Putin, in a long diatribe against the United States on his Telegram channel, ended by saying, the “idea to punish a country with the largest nuclear potential is absurd and potentially creates the threat to mankind’s existence.”

Regarding Alaska, which the United States purchased from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million, Russia’s lower house speaker, Vyacheslav Volodin stated, “Let America always remember, there is part of [Russian] territory: Alaska,” adding “So when they start trying to dispose of our resources abroad, before they do it, let them think: we also have something to return.” State Duma Vice Speaker Pyotr Tolstoy even proposed holding a referendum in Alaska, Volodin said, according to RBC.

Three months ago, Russia was making similar threats to take back Alaska because of U.S. sanctions. Alaska’s Governor responded:

Here’s what some Twitter users think of Russia’s threats: “The idea that Russia would casually threaten to invade and “reclaim” Alaska is somewhat insane. But, my God, the memes it would produce after watching them try to conduct a cross-Bering Strait invasion would be legendary.”

“‘Alaska is ours,’ a billboard from Russia. Fucking clowns[.]”

“If you think this is the first time russia publicly claims it’s going to take Alaska back, you’re not paying attention. All the way down from 1991, acute phase of the disease since 2014 (because they occupied Crimea and Western sanctioned were not particularly impressive).”

“RETARD ALERT[.] Billboards with the slogan “Alaska is ours!” started appearing in #Russia[.] #Putin cannot be this retarded right? Right?!”

Joe Biden is thinking about cutting Trump imposed tariffs on China

Interesting that this story is nowhere in the mainstream media. PBS covered it, but that seems to be it for the mainstream guys. The Twitterverse doesn’t seem worried. If you lived in Alaska, would you be concerned? Why do you think the mainstream media isn’t covering this story?
