President Joe Biden was widely mocked online over what was a perceived “Ron Burgundy” moment on Friday while he attempted to read from a teleprompter.
Ron Burgundy is the main character in the film Anchorman who was known for reading anything that was put on the teleprompter word for word without thinking about it.
Biden suffered an identical moment while reading his own teleprompter at a press conference about women in political power when he weirdly said “End of Quote. Repeat the line.” Anyone who has worked in film production before knows these were notes telling the president to repeat his last line for emphasis, but instead he read them directly.
It wasn’t long before the internet began tearing into Biden over his mistake.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk jumped in on the fun, declaring “Whoever controls the teleprompter is the real President!”.
He also shared a picture of one of the scenes from Anchorman where someone accidentally leaves a question mark at the end of a sentence on the teleprompter, leading to Ron Burgundy reading his name as a question.
Another user noted how the White House even attempted to cover up for the clear gaffe on the official records.
The White House tried to make it look like his weird mixed lines were actually written into the speech.
Another eagle-eyed twitter user pointed out the reaction on Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Baccerra’s face at the moment Biden drops the line. The cabinet secretary appears to laugh at his boss when he makes the strange statement.
Seeing Joe Biden making these so-called “gaffes” has become commonplace during his presidency. It has gotten to the point where his own staff writes childish note for him and tries to force him away from speaking honestly with the press. Do you think moments like these give Americans more or less confidence that Biden is mentally capable of leading the country?
