On Monday while speaking in San Antonio at the annual conference of UnidosUS, Jill Biden compared Latinos to “breakfast tacos.” She was trying to say they were unique, but the tone deaf comment received immediate backlash online.
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists responded and wrote “‘We are not tacos. Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by a variety of diasporas, cultures and food traditions, and should not be reduced to a stereotype.”
They also said that Biden should seek to “better understand the complexities of our people.”
“Raul helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community, as distinct as the bogidas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength,” Jill Biden proclaimed while talking about UnidosUS President Raul Yzaguirre.
Also notice, she butchered saying the word “bodega” – which is a well known word – and seemed to pronounce it “bogida.”
In April of last year, Jill Biden mispronounced “Si se puede,” which means “Yes, we can,” to farmers in Delano, California in another gaffe around the Spanish language.
The First Lady also talked about visiting Uvalde after the school massacre at the event and used it to stump for her husband’s gun control proposals..
She said, “I stood in front of those 21 crosses and touched the pictures of the bright, beautiful faces that would never again laugh, or open birthday presents, or tell their parents that they love them. And I knew that a piece of Uvalde would always be a part of me.”
She then promised to “do everything he can to call on Congress to act, including on measures to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines.”
She concluded to cheers, “A ban on guns that only belong on the battlefield. The right to make our own decisions about our own bodies.”
Conservative commentators and politicians jumped on Jill for her slip up.
Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted “#newprofilepic” next to a picture of a Taco.
“Jill Biden says Hispanics are as “unique” as tacos and calls bodegas “bogidas.” No wonder Hispanics are fleeing the Democratic Party!,” wrote Andy Biggs.
“Seriously. What’s crazy to me about @FLOTUS remarks is that she is reducing tens of millions of Americans from all different backgrounds, professions, and walks of life to “bodegas” & “tacos.” Ethnic stereotypes. Could you imagine her doing that to any other ethnic group?!” said Christina Pushaw.
Texas Republican congressional candidate Irene Armendariz-Jackson tweeted, “Hi @FLOTUS, I’m running for Congress in a border district here in Texas. Yesterday, you called my community a bunch of breakfast tacos. I want to thank you for showing everyone what utter racists you, your husband and your party are. You’re absolutely disgusting.”
Jill seems to take after her husband in making wild gaffes in public. This time it comes when Biden is struggling with Hispanic voters.
This is from the party of inclusion supposedly where they compare people to food items. I’m sure Jill Biden didn’t mean much by it. It seemed harmless, but what is not harmless are the policies that are killing Hispanic communities across this country like high gas prices and inflation.
