British Prince Harry Windsor claimed that the United States was rolling back human rights and leading to an assault on Democracy during a speech to the United Nations.
On Monday morning the controversial prince spoke to the United Nations General Assembly during their celebration of Nelson Mandela Day. He used the opportunity to push climate change fears while also attacking the Supreme Court’s new conservative majority.
“Climate change wreaking havoc on our planet with most vulnerable suffering most of all,” the Duke of Sussex declared. “The few weaponizing lies and disinformation at the expense of the many.”
Harry continued, “And from the horrific war in Ukraine to the rolling back of constitutional right in the US we are witnessing a global assault on democracy and freedom the cause of Mandela’s life.”
Prince Harry was joined by his wife Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, at the mostly empty event. The two of them have frequently waded into United States politics since they fled the United Kingdom for this country. Meghan has even hinted at an interest in a future political career with the potential for a presidential run.
Harry never actually met Nelson Mandela, who helped end the racist Apartheid system in South Africa. Despite that fact, Harry claimed a relationship with the legendary leader based on a single image of his mother Princess Diana meeting Mandela several months before her death.
“When I first looked at the photo straight away what jumped out was the joy on my mother’s face. The playfulness, cheekiness even, the pure delight to be in communion with another soul so committed to serving humanity,” said the Prince.
He continued, “Then I looked at Mandela. Here was a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders, asked to heal his country from the wreckage of its past and transform it for the future. A man who had endured the very worst of humanity – vicious racism and state-sponsored brutality.”
The Sussexes were invited to speak at the event by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Do you think they made the right choice by inviting the privileged prince of a European dynasty to speak about a man who fought the kind of institutional racism that Harry’s family helped establish?
