Noam Chomsky Says US Now Less Free Than Soviet Union

American philosopher and father of linguistics Noam Chomsky declared that the United States government has become more restrictive of Americans than the Soviet Union was of their own citizens.

Chomsky was interviewing with Russel Brand on his “Under the Skin with Russel Brand” show when the issue came up of censorship in the USA.

According to the popular liberal philosopher, life in the US has become akin to “living under a kind of totalitarian culture”, which he described as “worse in many ways” than life in the Soviet Union after the death of Joseph Stalin.

Chomsky noted that in the United States it has become all but impossible to get news from sources like the BBC, Voice of America, and German TV thanks to them being removed by networks like ATT and Verizon.

Despite that, Americans have now been banned from viewing Russian news like Russia Today (RT), which employ a large number of American journalists, and other news sources who may pose opposing viewpoints to that being pushed by the United States government.

The declaration by the controversial thought leader comes on the heels of an announcement from Verizon that they would be ending their deal to host One America News (OAN), a small conservative news company.

OAN used to enjoy distribution across multiple major platforms until the end of the 2020 election saw the network get kicked off many of these hosts for various reasons. With Verizon officially pulling them from their network, OAN is now only available on smaller, more obscure services.

According to Verizon, the decision was made after OAN failed to meet an agreement during negotiations on “fair” terms. The company said, “These negotiations were focused on economics, as they always are, but OAN failed to agree to fair terms.”

While the revelation of mass censorship is concerning, especially coming from someone like Noam Chomsky, it’s sadly nothing new. Americans have long been limited on our available media sources, with FOX News being the only conservative voice allowed on most basic TV packages. Do you think Americans would be better off if we had access to more information and viewpoints? Why do you think they have worked so hard to silence them?
