President Joe Biden is likely reeling after a new poll from the key early voting state of New Hampshire shows the incumbent leader behind with his own Cabinet Secretary.
The new poll from the University of New Hampshire found that Joe Biden is actually trailing Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg 16% versus 17% among likely Democrats voters in the 2024 primary election.
Trailing the two were Elizabeth Warren at 10%, Gavin Newsom at 10%, Senator Amy Klobuchar with 9%, Senator Bernie Sanders at 8%, and finally Vice President Kamala Harris trailing with only 6% of the vote.
Even worse, a mere 20% of total New Hampshire voters want to see Biden run for reelection at all. Only 31% of Democrats in the state want to see him run for a second term.
The hugely revealing poll comes as Joe Biden consistently polls under 40% nationally, making him one of the lowest polling presidents in American history at this point in his tenure.
Meanwhile Pete Buttigieg continues to make waves nationally, often serving as the White House’s most effective spokesperson on various issues even beyond transportation.
The former Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, came close to earning the Democratic nomination over Joe Biden in 2020 despite it being one of his first years on the national scene. Still, Buttigieg saw the writing on the walls coming into Super Tuesday and dopped out, throwing his support behind Biden and allowing him to overcome Senator Bernie Sanders on the key voting day.
Biden then named his formal rival to be one of the top members of his cabinet, handing over the Vice Presidency to a less effective presidential rival in Kamala Harris.
Buttigieg has also benefited politically from the controversy around whether or not gay marriage will be made a federally protected and recognized institution in the US Congress. This would prevent the Supreme Court from reversing current protections offered to gay and lesbian couples even if they were to reverse the decision in Obergefell v. Hodges.
Biden clearly sees the walls closing in on him, leading to his outspokenness over his intention to run for reelection regardless of the polls. Do you think Democrats will actually be able to convince him to retire? Do you think there could ever be a president willing to call it a day after 1 term?
