Los Angeles to Allow Non-Citizens to Work in Govenrment

The city of Los Angeles, California, is officially removing restrictions that prevent non-citizens from holding government jobs.

The new memo was authored by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda l. Solis and co-authored by Sheila Kuehl

“Los Angeles County is a community of immigrants from each corner of the world,” said Solis in a statement. “And while our County-government workforce reflects the community it represents, there is room for improvement. This motion seeks to make clear that the County, as one of the largest employers in the region, strives to be an inclusive and diverse workforce, and is committed to not excluding nor allowing citizenship to be a barrier to employment.”

Polis noted that more than 880,000 non-citizen, many of them here legally, and that the Public Defender’s Office had received “applications from non-citizens who are otherwise allowed to practice law in California but are disqualified from the application process because of the citizenship requirement.”

Los Angeles County Public Defender Ricardo García said that preventing non-citizens from holding these positions was no different than discrimination based on “cultural, racial, ethnic, or religious characteristics.”

“Barriers to employment based on cultural, racial, ethnic, or religious characteristics are contrary to our core values. Citizenship overlaps these demographic characteristics,” García said. “This motion, by Supervisors Solis and Kuehl, will promote equity in hiring and give the Public Defender’s Office access to the most qualified applicants for employment, irrespective of their citizenship status.”

The new order will not affect the Los Angeles Sheriff’s department, however, which will maintain their proof of citizenship requirement to serve on the force.

Many internet users were very critical of the new policy update.

The new order from the very liberal city is certain to cause a commotion. Do you think this is the right move to make or should government jobs be reserved for people who have completed the citizenship process in this country?

  • Should government jobs be reserved for people who have completed the citizenship process in this country? That just seemed like common sense. Illegal aliens who have no right to be here at all should receive only deportation and a rfi tracker as punishment for the flagrant trespasses against citizens.
