Donald Trump Trashes Nancy Pelosi Over Taiwan Trip

Donald Trump attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for taking a trip to Taiwan to reassure the island of America’s commitment to keeping them independent of China.

Nancy Pelosi and a congressional delegation landed in Taiwan on Tuesday evening and slept over in the controversial territory under the protection of heavily armed guards. While the general Republican party has been supportive of the trip, the former president was not as happy.

“Why is Crazy Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan. Always causing trouble,” Trump wrote. “Nothing she does turns out well (Two failed Impeachments, loss of House, etc.). WATCH!”

This is the first time that Trump has spoken about the controversial trip, which President Biden also publicly opposed over a week ago. That’s especially noteworthy since the two rarely agree on any issues.

While Donald Trump was still in office, however, he also famously pushed the People’s Republic of China’s button on the issue of Taiwan much like Pelosi did this week. In a break from US policy in the region, then-incumbent Trump accepted a direct call in 2016 with the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, congratulating him on his win. This was the first time a US president had spoken to a leader of the rebel government since 1979.

Trump pushed China even further after the call, thanking the “President of Taiwan” on Twitter despite the US maintaining the One China policy that says Taiwan is part of the communist nation. When the Obama Administration tried reassure China that the US was not changing policies based on Trump’s call, the incoming president retorted that the US didn’t need to follow that policy anymore.

While Donald Trump may have folded in on the classic US policy acknowledging Chinese supremacy in the region, 26 Republicans in the Senate signed a letter publicly supporting Pelosi’s trip to reassure the Taiwanese people of America’s commitment.

Trump and Biden clearly oppose Pelosi’s trip to the island nation while McConnell and his pals are backing her up. Which side do you think is right on the issue?
