The White House is urging the conversation about a name change for the Braves after President Biden hosted the team at the White House this week. The fact that his administration thinks that we should be talking about this instead of jobs, the economy, or healthcare shows how out of touch they are with America. This is just another example of political correctness run amok.
According to The New York Post, After President Biden hosted the Atlanta Braves to celebrate their 2021 World Series title, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre encouraged the team to have a “conversation” about selecting a new name.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp reacted to Jean-Pierre’s statement, tweeting, “The @Braves should always be the Atlanta Braves. Go Braves and Keep Choppin’!”
Senate candidate for Georgia Herschel Walker also reacted, tweeting, “Georgia will not fall for woke Washington’s attempt to change the name of the greatest baseball team in America. The reigning and future World Series Champs @Braves should NOT change their name.”
The Post also notes that Activists say it’s offensive to use Native American culture for commercial branding, so sports teams across the country have changed their names.
In July 2020, the Washington Redskins gave into pressure to change the football team’s name, which some advocates said was historically used as a racial slur. As of now, the team is known as the Commanders.
Last year, the Cleveland Indians changed their name to the Guardians.
However, there is ambiguity over whether American Indians want the Braves to rename themselves.
Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said last year that American Indians support the Braves name.
