During mounting backlash over leaked audio featuring Nury Martinez making racist remarks, the Los Angeles City Council president announced her resignation.
According to the Washington Examiner, there was a chorus of voices calling for her resignation after she was caught on tape blasting a black child of a white City Council member as “that little monkey,” among other racist remarks.
In October 2021, Martinez made these comments during a conversation with Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera as well as Councilmen Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo. On Sunday, leaks from the conversation surfaced on Reddit and sparked a political firestorm.
She blasted Councilman Mike Bonin’s black son in Spanish at one point, insisting he needed “a beat down,” FOX News notes.
“I take responsibility for what I said and there are no excuses for those comments. I’m so sorry. I sincerely apologize to the people I hurt with my words,” Martinez said in a statement.
“In the end, it is not my apologies that matter most; it will be the actions I take from this day forward. I hope that you will give me the opportunity to make amends. Therefore, effective immediately I am resigning,” she added.
