In Illinois, illegal immigrants will be able to apply for a two-year basic income pilot program that will provide them with monthly cash payments.

Townhall writes, as part of the Cook County Promise Guaranteed Income Pilot Program, 3,250 households will receive $500 per month for two years with “no strings attached,” Business Insider reports. In addition to including parts of Chicago, the county has over 5 million residents, making it the second largest county in the country.

To qualify, applicants must live in Cook County and earn less than 250 percent of the federal poverty level, or less than $69,375 for a family of four. Fox News reported that citizenship status will not be asked of applicants.

As stated on the Cook County website, the pilot program is open to all Cook County residents regardless of immigration status. In other words, if you are undocumented or your household has mixed status, and you meet the eligibility criteria, you are eligible to participate and information about your immigration status will not be shared with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (USSD) or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

A government press release states that 36 percent of county residents will be eligible to apply. This program is being funded by American Rescue Plan funds dedicated to helping Americans through the pandemic, according to the press release.

It is the largest pilot program of guaranteed income in American history, according to Toni Preckwinkle, president of the county’s board of commissioners.

Illegal immigrants in Illinois will soon be receiving more money from the state, while many Americans are still struggling to make ends meet. This is a slap in the face to hardworking American citizens who could use some financial help in these trying times. The state of Illinois should be focusing on taking care of its own residents before illegal immigrants. Hard Working Americans deserve better than this.
