CNN’s Jake Tapper premiere didn’t get a ratings boost despite an exclusive interview with Joe Biden.
The Washington Examiner reports, according to cable news ratings, Tapper didn’t draw a million viewers on CNN Tonight Tuesday and landed third behind Fox News and MSNBC.
There were 2.63 million total viewers for Fox’s Hannity and 1.59 million for MSNBC’s Alex Wagner Tonight, good enough to triple and double CNN’s turnout of 854,000.
According to Nielsen, Tapper drew 211,000 viewers versus MSNBC’s 144,000 in the key 25-54 age demographic. The key demographic, however, was won by Sean Hannity, who got 323,000 viewers.
Before Tapper took over the 9 p.m. CNN show, the primetime slot had a rotating host since Chris Cuomo was fired.
While Tapper’s Tuesday debut trailed Fox News and MSNBC in total viewers, it beat the network’s 9 p.m. numbers. Anderson Cooper 360 drew 504,000 viewers on Monday at 9 p.m.
Tapper’s new CNN show will run at least until Nov. 11, the week of the midterms, according to the network.
Meanwhile, as we reported earlier this week, Tapper may ultimately be on the chopping block as the network is about to lose a big name, according to NewsCycleMedia’s president.
This news, of course, follows a recent rash of firings and departures at CNN.
