Washington DC is one of the crime capitals of the United States, and yet the city council is making moves that will make the situation infinitely worse. I’m outraged at what the DC Council just did. They’ve voted to weaken the laws that protect our citizens, and in doing so they’re helping criminals get away with their crimes. This cannot stand, we have to let them know that we won’t tolerate this kind of behavior.
Townhall reports. Washington, DC’s city council voted on Tuesday to move ahead with the overhaul of the capital’s criminal code despite opposition from the mayor and police chief.
According to DCist, it requires a jury trial for anyone charged with a misdemeanor, eliminates all mandatory minimum sentences except for first-degree murder, and grants early release to people serving prison sentences. It is being championed by liberal nut job Councilmember Charles Allen (D). Burglary, robbery, carjacking, and illegally carrying a gun are also serious crimes with lesser penalties.
There will be another vote on the crime bill at the beginning of December, and it will take until 2025 for the changes to take effect if Mayor Muriel Bowser approves it as is.
Shockingly Muriel Bowser is not a fan of the proposed changes, despite her utter lack of effort in cleaning up one of the nation’s deadliest cities.
DCist reports. As the city faces prevalent concerns over public safety, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Robert Contee have expressed specific, but strenuous objections to portions of a long-planned overhaul of its 100-year-old criminal code. They claim certain provisions could clog up the courts or lower criminal penalties.
Bowser and Contee told lawmakers at a breakfast meeting on Tuesday that 95% of the rewrite of the code had reached consensus. It has been in the works for over a decade and seeks to modernize criminal laws that were originally written by Congress in 1901 and have only been updated piecemeal ever since.
However, they also said that specific provisions should be reconsidered or removed from the 231-page bill before it goes to the full council for debate and a vote before the end of the year.
This woke failed attempt at “reform” weakens law enforcement’s ability to keep our community safe and will make it harder for us to get justice when we are victims of crime. It requires a jury trial for anyone charged with a misdemeanor, eliminates all mandatory minimum sentences except for first-degree murder, and grants early release to people serving prison sentences. It is being championed by liberal nut job Councilmember Charles Allen. Burglary, robbery, carjacking, and illegally carrying a gun are also now eligible for early release – how stupid is that? Offender accountability is critical to keeping our communities safe, but this so-called “reform” bill makes it more difficult to hold criminals accountable for their actions. We need to stand up and let our elected officials know that we won’t tolerate this type of lawlessness in our city. Join me in contacting that wack job of a council member and telling him how wrong he was to pander to criminals. Get active and make sure this doesn’t become a trend across America!
