A missile strike on Polish farmland that killed two people this week did not appear to be an intentional attack.
According to a Ukrainian military telegram, the deadly explosion in Poland was caused by Ukraine’s anti-missile defense system S-300P.
The Associated Press writes, a Soviet-era projectile likely was launched by neighboring Ukrainian air defenses in response to a Russian bombing that destroyed the Ukrainian electricity grid, according to NATO member Poland and the head of the alliance.
According to three U.S. officials, preliminary assessments suggest that Ukrainian forces fired the missile at an incoming Russian missile. Because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, the officials spoke on condition of anonymity.
On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that the U.S. doesn’t “see anything that contradicts Poland’s assessment that a missile that landed near its border with Ukraine likely came from a Ukrainian air defense system.”
However, he said that Russia “bears ultimate responsibility” for the explosion that killed two people.
NATO might have been dragged into the conflict if Russia had deliberately targeted Poland.
As stated in Article 5 of the NATO treaty, any attack on a member state is deemed an attack on all members, allowing a country to call on its allies to respond jointly.
As noted by The Daily Caller, On the sidelines of the G20 summit, Joe Biden held an emergency meeting with world leaders after the missile struck Polish territory near the Ukraine border. While there Biden reaffirmed his commitment to the NATO country and on Tuesday, told reporters that it was “unlikely” that the missile came from Russia.
As noted by the Associated Press, in an initial statement, Russia denied launching the missile that landed in Poland. According to a Defense Ministry spokesman, no Russian strike Tuesday came closer than 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the Ukraine-Poland border. The Kremlin criticized Poland’s and other countries’ initial responses and praised Biden for his “restrained, professional response.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “We have witnessed another hysterical, frenzied, Russo-phobic reaction that was not based on any real data.”

The mainstream media, and world leaders need to be held accountable for spreading false information by making wild suggestions before all of the facts come out. Thankfully this incident did not jump start WWIII. Thank god the truth came out and we were able to avoid needless escalation.
