After a deadly hurricane devastated Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) denied funding for home repairs.

According to the Daily Caller, as a result of FEMA denying Florida’s request for funds, DeSantis announced the state would provide $25 million for repairs to damaged homes. Most of these funds will be given to nonprofit organizations that will distribute the aid.

A total of $35.2 million in private donations raised through the Florida Disaster Fund, which Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis established before Hurricane Ian hit, will also go toward the state’s home repair program, DeSantis announced, according to FOX News.

Over 125 people were killed by Hurricane Ian in 19 different Florida counties. According to ABC News, the deaths occurred between September 27 and 30, and drowning was the primary cause. According to estimates on October 7, the Category 5 storm caused $67 million in damage.

Governor Ron DeSantis is taking rapid action to alleviate the damage caused by Hurricane Ian in Florida. After FEMA denied his request for federal assistance, DeSantis immediately stated that the state would provide $25 million of its own funds for repairs. The Florida Disaster Fund, established by First Lady Casey DeSantis prior to the hurricane’s landfall, will also supply $35.2 million for the state’s home repair program, providing Floridians with much needed relief now.
