Governor Kate Brown Ignores Families of Murdered Victims

Oregon’s Governor seems to think murder is just a trivial matter and criminals should be given more rights than their victims. With the push of a button, she has quite literally spat in the face of murder victims’ families by disregarding their grievances and taking the side of perpetrators. It’s perhaps one of the most morally depraved decisions any politician can make, setting an alarming precedent for all others. Who knows what other shameful acts will follow?

As they say elections have consequences, and even with Oregon poised to have another Governor next month their current governor just commuted the sentences of some of the worst criminals in Oregon.

The Washington Free Beacon Reports, Governor Kate Brown is under fire from the families of Oregon’s 17 death row inmates victims for commuting their sentences.

One of the victim’s family members Sue Shirley, who’s parents were both murdered in 1988 stated “ I’m horrified and outraged and I don’t know what this means. … Will true life be true life? All I know is that we never get to have a say.”

Governor Brown’s office released a statement on the commutation of the sentences. “I have long believed that justice is not advanced by taking a life, and the state should not be in the business of executing people—even if a terrible crime placed them in prison”.  As Brown acknowledged in a statement, the deferred sentences have caused victims’ families “pain and uncertainty”. The decision wasn’t based on any “rehabilitation efforts” made by the inmates, according to her.

It is because of soft on crime politicians that Americans feel they have to take matters into their own hands.

The Blaze noted, Americans are twice as likely to carry loaded handguns on a daily basis as they were four years ago, according to a report in the American Journal of Public Health earlier this month. About 6 million Americans packed guns every day in 2019 compared to 3 million in 2015.

Adults carrying handguns in the U.S. increased from 9 million in 2015 to 16 million last month.

“Between increases in the number of people who own handguns and the number of people who carry every day, there has been a striking increase in handgun carrying in the U.S.,” said lead study author Dr. Ali Rowhani-Rahbar, who is also a professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington.

There has also been a shift in gun ownership from hunting to personal protection, according to the study.

In 1994, 46% of gun owners used firearms for protection. By 2015, 65% of firearm owners wanted a gun for protection, and 73% by 2019.

Murder victims’ families have every right to be horrified and outraged at Oregon’s Governor Kate Brown for her shameful decision to commute the death sentences of seventeen murder criminals. Not only does she blatantly disregard the law and lives lost, but also attempts to shield these reprehensible criminals from the harsh consequences for their actions. It really begs the question as to why commutting such heinous criminals is even an option? Unfortunately, this isn’t a new problem; due to soft on crime politicians like Brown, more and more Americans feel they must take matters into their own hands with concealed carry laws and protecting their Second Amendment rights. It’s high time that elected officials put those affected by murder first instead of putting the interests of murder criminals before those of murder victims’ families.
