When asked about Republican calls for Mayorkas’ impeachment, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas dodged the question.
After House Republicans regained control of the chamber, a reporter asked the secretary whether he was concerned about impeachment proceedings against him.
The Republican Study Committee announced in April that it would impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the border crisis. According to Republican Indiana Rep. Jim Banks, the chair of the Republican Study Committee, Mayorkas turned a “secure border into a lawless horror show.”
Kevin McCarthy, the then-House Minority Leader, also called to impeach Mayorkas while visiting the border last year.
The number of migrant apprehensions surged to record highs under Mayorkas’ leadership, surpassing 2.3 million in the fiscal year that began in October 2021. Republican lawmakers have reacted harshly to his assertion that the border is “secure.”
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ response when recently asked about the Republican calls for his impeachment is concerning. With security at the border spiraling out of control and record-high number of apprehensions, responsible officials deserve to be held accountable, and the American people should know why they have been failed. Clear imperative for action is needed as current security policies have turned the border into a “lawless horror show”. Impeachment proceedings must take place with due deliberation to ensure that incidents such as this never occur again.
