In keeping with his promise made before the 118th Congress was sworn in last week, Texas Republican Rep. Pat Fallon filed impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

According to FOX News, House Resolution 8, which impeaches Mayorkas for “high crimes and misdemeanors,” was introduced by Fallon on Monday and referred to the House Judiciary Committee. 

Meanwhile, in an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” Mayorkas said he would not resign over his handling of the southern border, adding that he was prepared to face investigations by House Republicans.

Republicans in the House are taking this initiative as part of their effort to fight the Biden administration on issues related to immigration and the southern border.

According to Fallon’s first article, Mayorkas has failed to faithfully execute the 2006 “Secure the Fence Act.” A secretary of Homeland Security is required by law to maintain operational control of the United States’ entire international land and maritime borders.

The second article alleges that Mayorkas, “in violation of his constitutional oath, willfully provided perjurious, false, and misleading testimony to Congress.” 

In support of that claim, the article cites Mayorkas’ testimony at congressional hearings on April 26 and November 15. During one hearing, Mayorkas, for example, testified that the border was “secure.”

In the final article, Mayorkas is accused of slandering border agents who were accused, but later cleared, of whipping Haitian migrants in Del Rio, Texas, in 2021.
