Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, defended the drama surrounding the election of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a day after McCarthy won the post in a record 15th round.
Even though the days-long process was messy, Jordan said democracy was never meant to be smooth. FOX News reports that Jordan insisted that the tumultuous speaker of the House vote was “exactly how the founders intended it.”
Although Republicans seemed to have been divided this week, Jordan additionally said he was confident they would come together to combat Democratic policies with legislative goals.
As a result of all six of his remaining GOP opponents voting “present,” McCarthy won the speakership with 216 votes, a bare majority below the normal 218 votes needed. Representatives Andy Biggs of Arizona, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Elijah Crane of Arizona, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Bob Good of Virginia and Matt Rosendale of Montana voted “present” in the final round.
After the vote, McCarthy said, “It just reminds me of what my father always told me: ‘It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.’
Congressman Jim Jordan’s defense of the chaos surrounding the House speaker vote last week was true in that it was a move that showcased democracy in action. Jordan highlighted the debate, accountability, and move forward mentality that had been reached by the representatives, showing his confidence that although Republicans appeared to have been divided, they are still ready to move ahead together with a unified purpose – to fight Democratic policies and get real legislative goals accomplished.
