House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) invited Joe Biden to deliver his State of the Union address next month.
On Friday, McCarthy, who was elected speaker just over a week ago, sent Biden a letter setting February 7 as the date for the president’s speech, the Daily Wire reports.
McCarthy mentioned actions the GOP-led House is planning for the next two years in his invitation letter.
McCarthy’s letter states, “The new year brings a new Congress, and with it, a responsibility to work towards an economy that is strong, a nation that is safe, a future that is built on freedom, and a government that is accountable.”
Karine Jean-Pierre, White House Press Secretary, said Biden accepted the invitation.
As Republicans won control of the House in the 2022 midterm elections and Democrats kept control of the Senate, this will be Biden’s first State of the Union address before a divided Congress.
Joe Biden is preparing to deliver his second State of the Union address in front of a divided house, having been invited by Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). The invite itself demonstrates the tension between sides of the political spectrum, with Republicans now controlling the house as a result of the 2022 midterm elections. With numerous scandals, damning reports and partisan politics involved with his presidency so far being exposed, this will certainly be an interesting speech as the president confronts a republican-majority house that has seen him as nothing short of disgraceful.
