On Wednesday, Rep. Matt Gaetz captured headlines with the announcement of his newly proposed bill, ‘Abolish the ATF Act’. The legislation looks to terminate the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) completely, thereby effectively dissolving a large law enforcement arm of the Justice Department. This move is sure to draw a variety of emotions from proponents and opponents alike — for some people, it could be seen as a step in restoring our constitutional freedoms completely. Daily Wire reports, on Wednesday, Rep. Matt Gaetz introduced a bill to terminate the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

“Abolish the ATF Act” simply disbands the law enforcement agency under the Justice Department.

Matt tweeted: House Republicans have the ATF in our crosshairs. The continued existence of the ATF is increasingly unwarranted based on their repeated actions to convert law-abiding citizens into felons. My bill today would abolish the ATF once and for all.

According to Gaetz, the “final straw” came last week after the Justice Department announced a new rule requiring ATF officials to tighten regulation on stabilizing braces, which, according to ATF Director Steven Dettelbach, essentially turns pistols into more dangerous short-barreled rifles.

Gun rights advocates criticized the changes as unconstitutional overreach that could negatively affect millions of everyday citizens, while Attorney General Merrick Garland characterized them as part of a crackdown on gun violence and bolstering public safety.

Gaetz particularly raised concerns about disabled veterans in his district who depend on stabilizing braces, and shrugged off ATF’s assurance that exemptions exist for individuals with disabilities because it could lead to arduous “case-by-case determinations.”

Rep. Gaetz, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, cosponsored a bill introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) that aimed to dismantle the ATF in 2021. Democrat controlled both chambers of Congress at the time, but Republicans now hold the House.

In the event that his bill to abolish ATF fails, Gaetz has vowed to take other measures against the agency, including a proposal to defund it. He also told Fox News there is “broad support” among Republicans for going after ATF.

It’s absolutely unacceptable for republicans to allow the ATF to violate the Second Amendment by targeting citizens and slowly chipping away at their rights. If they continue to let this agency overstep its authority, then why should anyone ever trust them again? The ATF has already proven itself to be a troublesome and unnecessary organization, so there’s no reason to keep it around any longer. The American people have had enough of their reckless behavior and partisan agendas, and we certainly deserve better than this. If they aren’t going to enhance the people’s ability to bear arms then they have no place in America.
