The effects of what could be considered third world problems have come knocking on the doorsteps of many seemingly ‘western’ countries, and the UK is the first to get a taste of it. With nationwide food shortages affecting supermarkets all over, the English government is taking drastic measures to protect their food supplies.

The UK’s leading supermarket chain, Tesco, has begun putting limits to the purchases of certain fruits and vegetables due to the country-wide shortage of fresh produce. A report states that customers can now only buy up to three tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers each. This rationing indicates how serious the issue is becoming, as the supply and demand for fruits and vegetables becomes increasingly unbalanced.

The Mirror reports that Tesco, the country’s top grocery retailer, has introduced three items per customer limits on tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. Budget supermarket Aldi implemented a similar policy, while Asda limits lettuce, bagged salad, broccoli, cauliflower, and raspberries.

The shoppers at Morrisons are allowed to buy two items per individual when buying tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and peppers.

According to BBC News, Lidl was the latest supermarket chain to impose limits on fruit and vegetable purchases as cold weather in Spain and Morocco impacts fresh produce availability in the UK.

Reuters reports that British Farming Minister Mark Spencer met with grocery executives earlier this week to discuss the shortages. In a statement from the British Retail Consortium, a trade association representing supermarkets, consumers can expect relief in the coming weeks, and suppliers acknowledged “the importance of food security, but noted that a wider strategy is required involving government, farmers, food manufacturers, retailers and hospitality.”

Food and energy prices have increased worldwide due to supply chain bottlenecks and the Russian war in Ukraine, which have contributed to the shortages in the United Kingdom.

Amazingly, the English remain remarkably composed and collected in their approach to food rationing. To put this in perspective, if a situation similar to this was occurring in the US, it would undoubtedly drive us citizens off the walls.
