In 2020, a criminal died in the hands of the police and the media quickly pointed their fingers squarely at the cops, leading to an explosion of solidarity towards George Floyd. At that time, police officers were put into an unfair position as violent protests erupted across America. But fast-forward to three years later and the cops are still being punished while liberal state governments such as New York reward the protesters.
Woke New York City is taking an important step in holding up their commitment to “justice” and providing closure for past wrongs. The city recently announced their plans to compensate protesters from a 2020 demonstration following the death of George Floyd with a monetary settlement. This is in response to the class action lawsuit filed by the protesters, who would be receiving up to $21,500 each for harm done to them
The Washington Examiner reports, in a new settlement, New York City plans to compensate protesters from a 2020 demonstration following George Floyd’s death with $21,500 each.
According to the proposed settlement, the city will pay $21,500 to each member of the class-action suit, plus an additional $2,500 to those who received “Desk Appearance Tickets.”
It is estimated that the settlement could amount to $4 million to $6 million if approved by a judge. Around 300 people attended the protest, and roughly 90 have already settled with the city regarding alternative complaints.
Let’s TAKE A LOOK at what some of the protesters say happened.
Class-action suit participants allege “violations of their rights under the First, Fourth, and Fourteenth Amendments” due to an incident on June 4, 2020.
The largest settlement happened back in 2010 when: a judge approved a settlement where Washington, D.C., would pay $18,000 to each demonstrator who had been arrested en masse in 2000. Protesters were arrested near the World Bank and International Monetary Fund buildings. The final settlement amount was $13.7 million.
The protest may have started out peacefully, but the real question that needs to be asked is whether or not violence was created by the crowd as a result. If so, then any class action suit has no bearing and in fact would be invalid. It is absolutely right that Americans have the right to express their opinion freely and to come together – it is part of our rights established in the Constitution. However, one person looting does not constitute peaceful protest but rather undermines the whole purpose of such an event and that makes all those involved at fault for allowing such an activity. If the protest was completely peaceful then they deserve the settlement but if it wasn’t they don’t.
