President Biden’s Hesitation in Chicago Mayoral Race Sparks Controversy

With a skyrocketing crime rate and growing corruption throughout the city, chicagoans need help more than ever.

Daily Caller reports, it was reported Wednesday that President Biden is hesitant to endorse a candidate for Chicago mayor.

According to the report, Biden sees two bad choices in the race: Paul Vallas, a former Republican, and Brandon Johnson, a far-left progressive. According to the outlet, the president may have to think about how the candidates’ track records on crime could expose him to attacks from Republicans.

Pete Giangreco, an Illionis-based Democratic strategist stated “Most Democrats look at the two choices and in an extreme sense they are choices between a Republican and a socialist, There’s not a Joe Biden mainstream Democrat running for mayor of Chicago.”

A “lifelong Democrat,” Vallas insists that he has been critical of abortion in the past. However, he has been endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police and conservative groups.

Despite having endorsed defunding police in the past, Johnson has distanced himself from that position, claiming that his administration would staff and train 200 detectives.

On Wednesday, Chicago mayoral candidates Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas debated, with Johnson lobbing personal attacks and Vallas demonstrating his experience.

The pair advanced to the runoff after defeating Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, which was the first time an incumbent has been ousted since 1989. Under Johnson or Vallas, Chicago will take a more progressive stance on issues under the next four years, depending on the outcome of the runoff on April 4.

Both runoff candidates have opposing views on the two main topics of the mayoral race: crime and education. Several large organizations and unions continue to endorse Johnson and Vallas, including the Service Employees International Union Local 1 and former mayoral candidate Willie Wilson.

President Biden’s hesitation to endorse a candidate for Chicago mayor is indicative of the extremely tight race between Paul Vallas, a former Republican, and Brandon Johnson. Both candidates are causing more confusion than progress in Chicago’s hotly contested mayoral race, and it appears that Biden does not want to get dragged into the middle of this political tug-of-war. With chicago’s skyrocketing crime rate and ongoing concerns of corruption, chicagoans need a mayor that is going to lead them in the right direction.
