Governor Newsom promised Californians he would eradicate homelessness and now, four years later, it has become a crisis. Newsom had the audacity to campaign on a goal that many thought was possible to achieve, Californian’s were foolish enough to cast their votes without asking questions and now they are living with the consequences.  However, he’s finally taken action and revealed his much-anticipated plan. Newsom’s Brilliant plan that took him 4 years to come up with is to – get this- ask the federal government to “temporarily” bailout his homeless community for six months.

Daily wire reports, in order to reduce the state’s disproportionately large homeless population and to provide housing assistance to those at risk, Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to use federal healthcare funds to cover at least six months of rent.

Governor Newsom recently asked President Biden to approve a program called “transitional rent” under Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program.

A Los Angeles Times article reports that state officials modeled the program after similar federally approved programs in Oregon and Arizona that would pay low-income enrollees who use state healthcare up to six months’ rent or temporary housing.

Newsom and other proponents of the program argue that temporarily covering rent would save taxpayers money rather than increasing the cost of institutional care in California hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons.

According to Bruce Alexander, a spokesperson for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal government has not yet decided whether to approve the request.

As per the National Academy for State Health Policy, Medicaid cannot pay for housing development or rent directly. The program can, however, assist enrollees to find and maintain housing.

Based on the federal government’s imperfect “Point in Time” count of the nation’s homeless population, 30% of the 233,832 Americans experiencing homelessness live in California. Although Newsom admitted the numbers likely don’t reflect the official count, he acknowledged it is much higher than tallied.

What a brilliant idea isn’t right? Why not see if his new Tiny homes program works as he claims it will. He promised Californinians to handle homelessness, the federal taxes do not need to get involved in the mix. Americans across the country also have problems they have to deal with. Paying the homeless rent for 6 months is a bandage to a much bigger problem, what happens after the 6 months are over? Will they magically all be back on their feet? I think we know the answer to that question.
