The former acting CIA director, said that their intent was twofold: to share their concern with the American public that Russians were involved with the issue and to help Vice President Biden win the election. He admitted that he wanted to help Biden win because of his personal preference.

Morell, who was working as a podcaster and contributor at CBS News, was said to have been on the short list for CIA director and had his desire for a promotion leveraged against him in return for his cooperation.
