The southern border crisis is not easing up; in fact, it is getting worse. Law enforcement announced over the weekend that they seized millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs, including fentanyl, enough to kill 2.75 million people. This news comes as hundreds of thousands of immigrants gather in Mexico, waiting to flood the United States. The termination of Title 42, a public health order that allows law enforcement to quickly deport border crossers, is expected to lead to a surge in illegal border crossings, putting a tremendous strain on law enforcement. Despite the Biden administration’s efforts, there seems to be no resolution in sight.
Law enforcement officials seized a shocking $10 million worth of drugs on the southern border over the weekend, as hundreds of thousands of immigrants gather in Mexico to prepare to flood the United States this week and in the foreseeable future. The drugs included $3.6 million worth of cocaine, nearly a million dollars’ worth of heroin, and enough fentanyl to kill 2.75 million people. This is more than the entire population of Chicago!
Customs and Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz on Monday shared that agents seized a total of 164 pounds of marijuana, 83 pounds of methamphetamine, 66 pounds of cocaine, and 11 pounds of fentanyl. Even more concerning is that, of these substances, just two to three milligrams of fentanyl can kill a user. The inevitable devastation from these drugs is staggering.
But these numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. The total value of the drugs seized is undoubtedly just a fraction of what is coming across the border, as most of it goes undetected by authorities.
Ortiz also disclosed that agents apprehended almost 26,400 illegal aliens in a single week and knows that at least 7,399 crossed the southern border and evaded law enforcement. This alarming disclosure provided a snapshot of the daily inflow of narcotics and illegal aliens just days before the end of Title 42, a public health order that allowed law enforcement to quickly deport border crossers. Officials expect crossings to surge as Title 42 lapsed on Thursday, putting tremendous strain on law enforcement. Illegal border crossings could swell from roughly 3,000 a day to 15,000 a day in the coming weeks.
According to Border Patrol officials, roughly 700,000 migrants are waiting in Mexico to enter the United States. In an internal memo, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas even warned that the end of Title 42 “will strain our workforce, our communities, and our entire system.”.
It is also important to note that although the Biden administration routinely touts the amount of fentanyl law enforcement seizes, the number of lethal overdoses in the United States is at a record high. Experts believe that the amount of narcotics caught traveling through the southern border represents only a small fraction of what ultimately makes it into the nation’s interior.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has ordered 1,500 troops to the southern border to assist with processing aliens after they enter the country. However, members of the military will not play any role in enforcing immigration law, according to the Pentagon.
These alarming facts and figures illustrate just how dire the situation at the southern border has become and will remain as long as Biden is in power. The daily inflow of narcotics and illegal aliens continues, and the termination of Title 42 only exacerbates the situation. The seizure of $10 million worth of illegal drugs is just the tip of the iceberg; experts believe that it represents only a small fraction of what ultimately makes it into the nation’s interior. As hundreds of thousands of immigrants gather in Mexico, waiting to cross the border, the United States faces an unprecedented crisis that requires a swift and effective response. The Biden administration must take immediate action to secure the southern border and protect American citizens.
