President Joe Biden has just vetoed a congressional Republican-led disapproval resolution against the District of Columbia’s police reform bill. This comes on the three-year anniversary of the death of George Floyd. The bill includes severe restrictions on the use of force and deadly force, banning chokeholds, and improving access to body-worn camera recordings, among other things. The reforms were enacted on an emergency basis last year, after Floyd’s death, but were subject to congressional oversight due to Washington’s local legislation. Senate Republicans forced a vote on the disapproval resolution in the upper chamber, but it was overturned by the president’s veto.
