Brazil’s Socialist President Welcomes Venezuelan Dictator: Ignoring US Sanctions, Lula da Silva Receives Nicolás Maduro
Venezuelan communist dictator Nicolás Maduro was received by Brazilian socialist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday. Despite a $15 million reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest, the socialist government of Brazil held an official ceremony to welcome him. The bilateral meeting set the tone for the upcoming summit of South American leaders. This union demonstrates the strongest level of resistance to American sanctions in the region.
Brazil’s Lula not only reestablished diplomatic relations with Venezuela but also blamed US sanctions for the poverty in the country. The American strategy to contain Venezuela’s regimes is significantly weakened by this new cooperation between the two South American giants. Both Lula and Maduro are adverse to the United States’ role in the region and are seeking ways around their imposed sanctions.
The previous government of conservative former President Jair Bolsonaro had severed diplomatic relations with Venezuela and declared Maduro’s regime as “persona non grata” in Brazil. By contrast, Lula is now actively collaborating with left-wing dictators. Meanwhile, dictator Nicolás Maduro stands accused of international terrorism and association with drug trafficking by then-Attorney General William Barr.
In the face of these serious accusations and international outcry, Lula’s decision to welcome Maduro into Brazil has raised alarm among the opposition critics within the country, who assert that Venezuela is a dictatorship eroding democratic institutions. This recent turn of events highlights the growing geopolitical rifts between the major players in the region and their varying stance towards the United States.
