Maine State Police Trooper Denver Roy attempted to stop Holford’s vehicle on Interstate 95 in Houlton, Maine. However, Holford did not comply and continued driving. As the pursuit continued north, Trooper Roy noticed a sign in the truck suggesting the vehicle contained an explosive device, though the specifics of the sign remain unclear.

The truck eventually stopped between the U.S. and Canadian border, prompting Roy and other troopers to instruct Holford to exit the vehicle. When he attempted to maneuver the truck towards the Canadian border, Corporal Eric Paquette fired at him. Holford was not injured, and later surrendered to the Maine State Police before being taken to Aroostook County Jail.

Meanwhile, the Maine State Police Bomb Squad and crime scene technicians advised motorists to use alternative entry points while they processed the scene. Corporal Paquette, who has 23 years of experience with the Maine State Police, was promoted in the Firearms Training Unit in March. He has extensive training in various weapons platforms and has attended several armorer schools.
