**Wanda Sykes Criticizes Chappelle’s Trans Jokes and Bathroom Bans**
Comedian Wanda Sykes recently voiced her objections to fellow comic Dave Chappelle’s jokes about transgender people, describing them as “hurtful and damaging.” She also shared her opinions on laws prohibiting transgender individuals from using their preferred bathrooms, calling them “hateful.”
Exposing the controversy surrounding Chappelle’s jokes about transgender people, Sykes stated she doesn’t believe her own Netflix special balances the scales, as Chappelle’s statements were particularly harmful to the transgender community. Despite being friendly with Chappelle, Sykes mentioned that she would confront him on this issue if given the opportunity.
In addition to this, Sykes expressed her support for transgender people and condemned laws banning them from using their desired restrooms. Although she is not transgender herself, she backed the community 100% and wanted to shine a light on their struggles, showcasing the hatred and stupidity they face.
Sykes also defended drag queens in her latest special, controversially stating, “until a drag queen walks into a school and beats eight kids to death with a copy of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ I think you’re focusing on the wrong [stuff].”
Sykes attributed America’s regression in women’s rights and LGBTQ rights to Trump supporters. While mass media tends to focus on this regression, Sykes highlighted the importance of concentrating on the wins for these communities, despite how scarce they may be.
Lastly, Sykes shared her experiences discussing race with her white, French wife, Alex. After admitting to initial difficulties in understanding America’s racial history, Alex acknowledged her racial privilege to Sykes.
