Biden’s Priorities: More Aid for Ukraine, as Americans Face Financial Struggles

In the midst of a debt ceiling crisis, the Biden administration has found hundreds of millions of dollars to send overseas. On Wednesday, the United States government announced a new $300 million defense aid package for Ukraine as American families continue to face financial difficulties.

This $300 million package contains a wide array of military equipment and weaponry, including munitions for Patriot air defense systems, AIM-7 missiles, Avenger air defense systems, and High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), among other items. The release of this package marks the thirty-ninth drawdown of equipment from Department of Defense inventories for Ukraine since August 2021.

Since the beginning of the Biden administration, the United States has committed over $38.3 billion of taxpayer money in security aid to Ukraine. This amount has increased drastically since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. National Security Council (NSC) spokesman John Kirby confirmed during a press conference on Wednesday that the United States will “continue to support Ukraine and help give them the things that they need to better defend themselves as part of all that effort.”

However, this news raises questions about the Biden administration’s priorities and the allocation of taxpayer dollars. As millions of American families grapple with inflation, increasing gas prices, and a looming debt ceiling crisis, the federal government’s commitment to sending such a large sum overseas is concerning.
