**A New Game Promotes Global Cooperation on Climate Change**
A new board game, Daybreak, aims to unite players from opposing global superpowers to collaboratively address climate change. Developed by the creative minds behind the 2008 hit game Pandemic, Daybreak offers an optimistic vision for the world’s future with players developing innovative technologies and resilient societies to decarbonize our planet.
Matteo Menapace and Matt Leacock, the designers behind the popular game Pandemic, joined forces once again to create a board game tackling the climate crisis without being preachy. As a result, the game Daybreak was developed, where players act as the government of various countries or regions, including the U.S., China, and the European Union. The objective of the game is simple: governments must negotiate with one another in order to reduce greenhouse emissions.
In an interesting twist, if one player-government achieves net-zero emissions, they emerge as the winner. However, if a player-government has too many communities in crisis, everyone loses. The game presents a common enemy for all players: time. As time expires, the game is over, promoting cooperation amongst players to find high-impact solutions best for the planet.
Leacock explained that each power has unique abilities and a global responsibility to contribute to the fight against climate change. The game encourages even adversarial superpowers like the U.S. and China to cooperate and adopt a more globalist approach.
Interestingly, Leacock also commented on the distinguishing features between the U.S. and China, pointing out the former’s expertise in research and development and the latter’s direct control over its economy.
In an effort to make Daybreak even more inclusive, the creators are seeking individuals with experience in climate advocacy, policy, science, engineering, art, or games – particularly those hailing from the Global South – to join their team.
**Daybreak Inspires Hope and Cooperation for Our Planet’s Future**
Ultimately, Daybreak captures the urgency and importance of addressing climate change on a global level, promoting cooperation between superpowers and inspiring hope for a greener, more sustainable future.
