Walgreens Feels the Heat Over New Store Design That Targets Theft
Walgreens recently launched a brand-new, anti-theft-focused store model in Chicago, which has sparked accusations of racial profiling from community members. In an effort to reduce theft and increase safety, the store’s layout features only two visible aisles and requires customers to place orders through a kiosk. However, some residents argue that the new design sends a negative message.
The new Walgreens store layout aims to protect not only store merchandise but also to foster a safer environment for customers and employees alike. The company believes that the shift to a more e-commerce inspired design will significantly reduce instances of theft. Despite the positive intentions behind the redesign, some community members, including neighborhood peacekeeper Jacoby Gunn, argue that it is racial profiling. These individuals feel that moving stock to the back of the store and creating a more controlled shopping experience suggests that the store and its customers are untrustworthy.
With Chicago having one of the highest Black populations in the nation, it is no surprise that the accusations of racial profiling are gaining traction on platforms such as Twitter. Moreover, the Walgreens store in question had previously been looted during the 2020 George Floyd riots, making the new design even more controversial.
Customers, such as Sirak Goitom, also expressed discontent with the new setup, describing it as confusing and less easy to navigate. Yet, not everyone in the area agrees with the backlash. South Loop resident Mu Ergin feels that the new layout has created an overall cleaner and more organized store. Many Twitter users are also voicing their opinions on the matter, with some supporting the changes and others suggesting they are racially motivated.
Controversy Surrounds Walgreens’ Bold New Store Layout
The recent introduction of a new anti-theft store model by Walgreens has drawn both support and condemnation from the Chicago community. While the company views the innovative design as a proactive safety measure, some residents feel it is an unfair display of racial profiling. The debate surrounding the store’s new layout is sure to continue, as many voices are being heard on both sides of the issue.
