Chicago Prepares to Relocate 400 Undocumented Immigrants to Daley College: Tensions Rise at Local Gathering

**Chicago’s black community expresses outrage over illegal shelter plan at Richard J. Daley College**

Chicago’s residents are infuriated by the city’s decision to spend $51 million on illegal immigrants and convert buildings at Richard J. Daley College into temporary shelters for them. This has led many in the black community to question why citizens are not prioritized over illegal border crossers, demanding that the funds be redirected to help American citizens.

Last Thursday, concerned residents from the Southside neighborhood gathered to discuss the city’s plan to repurpose three buildings on the campus, including the gymnasium, as temporary shelters for illegal immigrants. Many voiced their objections, questioning when US citizens would be put first and suggesting that these immigrants be housed with politicians instead.

According to Block Club Chicago, those staying at the Daley College shelter must follow city rules: no visitors, no illegal drugs or alcohol, mandatory check-ins and check-outs at the front desk, and an 11 p.m. curfew. The city’s Department of Family and Support Services ensures security at the building 24/7, while police officers regularly patrol the area.

Ald. Derrick Curtis (18th), whose ward includes Daley College, was among the 13 alderpeople voting against allocating $51 million towards staffing, transportation, and food at the city’s temporary migrant shelters. Curtis expressed his concerns at Thursday’s meeting, stating that while he does not oppose asylum-seekers, he still takes issue with the city’s plan and its short-notice announcement.
